Students in the Medical Assistant program explore a variety of allied health professions and develop an awareness of job opportunities in the medical field. Emphasis is placed on administrative and clinical skills typically performed in the clinic setting. Recommended academic classes include Anatomy, Physiology, and biology. Strong math and science skills are a plus for this program. Students in the Medical Assisting program learn basic clinical procedures, infection control, communication, pharmacology, phlebotomy, laboratory and EKG skills. Students are also instructed in the sciences as it relates to medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and laboratory techniques. Students participating in this program have the opportunity to obtain the following certifications: Certified Clinical/Medical Assistant, EKG Technician, Pharmacy Technician, Health Care Provider CPR, Heartsaver First Aid/CPR, Blood Borne Pathogens Certificate, Dean Vaughn Medical Terminology as well as six (6) college credits in Medical Terminology and Allied Health. Upon graduation students can begin employment as a Medical Assistant, Administrative Medical Assistant, EKG Technician, and Phlebotomist or pursue a post-secondary education in Nursing or an Allied Health career such as Radiology, Medical Laboratory or Physician Assistant.
